Extra time is one of the most dramatic parts of football, often deciding the outcome of high-stakes matches. But how does it actually work? What’s the difference between extra time and injury time? And most importantly, how does extra time affect your bets? This guide explains the rules, clarifies betting implications, and shows how to track extra time events using OddsPortal.

Key Takeaways

• Extra time is played when a knockout match ends in a draw after 90 minutes.
• It consists of two 15-minute halves, with a short break in between.
• Most standard football bets (match result, over/under, etc.) do NOT include extra time – unless otherwise stated.

Use OddsPortal to track match events, extra time, and live betting opportunities.

What Is Extra Time in Football?

Extra time is an additional 30 minutes of play, split into two halves, used to determine a winner if a match is still level after 90 minutes (plus any injury/stoppage time).

• Used in: Knockout rounds of tournaments (e.g., Champions League, World Cup, FA Cup) where a winner must be decided.
• Not used in: League matches, group stages, or friendlies – those end after 90 minutes.

If scores are still level after extra time, most competitions move to a penalty shootout.

Extra Time vs. Injury Time

• Injury (Stoppage) Time: Minutes added at the end of each half to compensate for stoppages, injuries, or delays.
• Extra Time: An entirely separate period, only in knockout matches, for deciding a winner.

How Does Extra Time Affect Betting?

This is crucial for every punter:

• Most bets are settled after 90 minutes + injury time.
• “Match result”, “over/under goals”, “both teams to score”, and most player props are based on regulation time only. For example, if you bet on Team A to win and they win in extra time, but it’s a draw after 90 minutes, your bet loses (unless otherwise stated).
• Specific “To Qualify” or “Winner” markets DO include extra time and penalties.
• "To lift the trophy” or “to qualify” bets settle on the team progressing, however they win.
• Extra time markets: Some bookies offer separate markets for extra time: “Who will win extra time?”, “goals in extra time”, “player to score in extra time”, etc.
• Live betting: You can place new bets when a match enters extra time – lines are set just before it starts.
