What Is a Trixie Bet? Full Explanation and Examples
To make informed betting choices, you must understand the various types of bets available. This guide is here to help you with that by going over what is a Trixie bet and what advantages it offers.
Simply put, a Trixie bet is a system bet involving three selections across different events. On this page, I’ll share information that goes beyond its basics. I’ll also highlight a few practical examples and tips. By the end of this guide, you should fully understand how this bet works and how to use it in the best possible way.
What is a Trixie bet?
A Trixie bet, despite its name, involves four bets. Three is actually the number of selections in play. The four bets I mentioned include:
- Three doubles
- One treble
To get paid, at least two of the three selections must win. That’s the main difference between a Trixie bet and a standard treble bet. The latter requires three winning selections. This means that the main benefit of choosing a Trixie is that you get some insurance.
Remember that the total stake is multiplied by four, meaning a €1 Trixie costs €4. The returns depend on the odds of the winning selections. This applies to whatever currency you’re using. I’ll just use Euro (€) as an example for this guide.
What is a Trixie bet in football?
If you are a football fan, you’re probably wondering what a Trixie bet is in football. Before I explain this, let me remind you that you can make a Trixie bet on various sports. Still, football and horse racing enthusiasts use it the most. Given its popularity, it’s no surprise that many new betting sites include it in their offer.ri
With the help of a Trixie bet in football, you add three selections from different football matches to the bet slip.
For example, you might pick Manchester United to win against Aston Villa, Liverpool to win against Manchester City, and Chelsea to win against Arsenal. The bet includes doubles (Manchester United and Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea, and Liverpool and Chelsea) and a treble (Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea). At least two selections must win to generate a return. This makes the Trixie bet less risky than a standard accumulator.
The table below analyzes a scenario involving a Trixie bet in football.
| Selection | Match | Team to win | Odds | Bet type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Selection 1 | Match 1 | Manchester United vs. Aston Villa | 2.50 | Included in: Double (1+2), Double (1+3), Treble (1+2+3) |
| Selection 2 | Match 2 | Liverpool vs. Manchester City | 2.80 | Included in: Double (1+2), Double (2+3), Treble (1+2+3) |
| Selection 3 | Match 3 | Chelsea vs. Arsenal | 2.20 | Included in: Double (1+3), Double (2+3), Treble (1+2+3) |
Now, let me analyze the potential returns based on different winning scenarios. Again, I’ll use euros (€) as an example.
Two Selections Win:
Manchester United (2.50) + Liverpool (2.80) Win, Chelsea Loses:
- Double 1: €1 × 2.50 × 2.80 = €7.00
- Double 2, Double 3, Treble: €0 (include Chelsea)
- Total Return: €7.00
Manchester United (2.50) + Chelsea (2.20) Win, Liverpool Loses:
- Double 2: €1 × 2.50 × 2.20 = €5.50
- Double 1, Double 3, Treble: €0 (include Liverpool)
- Total Return: €5.50
Liverpool (2.80) + Chelsea (2.20) Win, Manchester United Loses:
- Double 3: €1 × 2.80 × 2.20 = €6.16
- Double 1, Double 2, Treble: €0 (include Manchester United)
- Total Return: €6.16
All Three Selections Win:
- Double 1: €1 × 2.50 × 2.80 = €7.00
- Double 2: €1 × 2.50 × 2.20 = €5.50
- Double 3: €1 × 2.80 × 2.20 = €6.16
- Treble: €1 × 2.50 × 2.80 × 2.20 = €15.40
- Total Return: €7.00 + €5.50 + €6.16 + €15.40 = €34.06
One or No Selections Win:
- Return: €0 (no payout, as at least two selections must win)

What is a Trixie in horse racing?
The answer to the question “What is a Trixie in horse racing?” is not much different compared to the one about Trixie in football. This time, we have a system bet involving three horses from various races. As a bettor, you select a horse to win in three separate races, such as at different meetings or times on the same day. Once again, you must have at least two winners to yield a return.
The good news is that many online betting promotions and offers focused on horse racing accept its contribution to the wagering requirements.
The other elements are identical to Trixie bets in football except for the opportunity to place an each-way Trixie bet, which will be explained in the following section.
Each-way Trixie bets basics
One of the main differences between Trixie betting in horse racing and football is the each-way Trixie bet, which is available only in the former. Many top betting platforms offer this option for other sports with place terms as well (e.g., auto racing, cross-country running).
So, the each-way Trixie is a variation of a standard Trixie bet that includes both win and place bets for three selections. For each of the four bets, you place both a win bet and a place bet (the horse must finish within the bookmaker’s specified position, typically top 3). That’s why you technically have eight total bets.
At least two selections must win or place for success, depending on the bet type. Also, the stake is doubled compared to a standard Trixie.
| Feature | Standard Trixie | Each-way Trixie |
|---|---|---|
| Selections | 3 horses from different races | 3 horses from different races |
| Bet types | 3 doubles + 1 treble (win only) | 3 doubles + 1 treble (win and place) |
| Total bets | 4 bets | 8 bets (4 win + 4 place) |
| Stake (€1 per bet) | €4 total (€1 x 4) | €8 total (€1 x 8) |
| Return condition | At least 2 selections must win | At least 2 selections must win or place |
| Perfect for | Bettors willing to take a higher risk, focused on wins, prefer lower stakes. | Bettors who don’t like to risk much and use higher stakes. |
What makes a Trixie bet a good option?
With so many betting options, it’s fair to ask why you should choose a Trixie bet. Well, I believe there’s a wide range of advantages to using it. Here are a few of these advantages:
A Trixie bet provides a safety net compared to a standard treble. Namely, you get a return if only two of your three selections win. That’s less risk of losing your entire stake if one selection fails. Of course, returns are never guaranteed with any type of sports betting, so you should still bet responsibly.
A Trixie is versatile and can be used in various sports, such as horse racing, football, and tennis. It lets bettors combine selections from different events. Many live betting sites take this flexibility to another level by allowing you to wager on events that have already started.
By creating a combo of three doubles and a treble, a Trixie offers greater payout potential than betting on a single or a single double. This is especially true if all three selections win.
Pros and cons of a Trixie bet
Below, you will find a summary of the Trixie bet’s advantages and disadvantages.
- Brings balance between cost and coverage
- Less risky than other multiple bet types
- Each-way option available
- Higher cost than a single bet
Conclusion – A Trixie bet has its upsides
As noted in this guide, a Trixie bet can be a good option for bettors seeking a balance between risk and reward in sports betting. Its specific structure, covering three selections in four bets, make it possible to win something even if one selection fails.
Compared to single bets, a Trixie provides higher potential payouts, while compared to a treble, it provides a safety net. Overall, its flexibility and coverage make it a compelling option for betting, particularly on sports such as horse racing and football.
